Reading Pride Awards 2009

John Woods – Lifetime Achievement Award

His work locally goes without question as one of the hardest and longest standing members of the LGBT community. His work with local LGBT charities can not be question, to put it simply he is one of the corner stones of our community. A true tribute to us as his friends and colleagues but a tribute to an avid charity worker, campaigner and much admired man.

This award is designed to recognise the work of an individual who's tireless work in the field of LGBT support services has changed and enriched the lives of the individuals they have touched. It is to recognise a lifetime of work and community support.

Dennis Hambridge – LGBT Campaigner Award

His work transcends continents from the US to Africa to the UK. He has campaigned on such varied fronts as anti homophobia, transfobia and human rights. A founding member of the GAAI Gay Activists Alliance International which came to form in 1970 after the 1969 Stonewall riots. He still tirelessly campaigns today as strongly as he did when he began.

This award is to commemorate and acknowledge the work of a campaigner through sheer perseverance has overcome all obstacles and feared no reprisals for the campaigns they have led on. This award is to say thank you for putting yourself in the front line of equality.

SohoBoyz – LGBT Charity / Business Award

This organisation has taken a role which has been filled with stigma and taboo, but relentlessly has campaigned and pioneered working with escorts developing education packages to further their learning and enable them to make a choice in life. Their work receives no direct government funding and relies heavily on donations and bequests.

This award is an open category award to recognise the work and dedication of a business to the market they service. It is open to all and is a recognition of the effort and work they have put into the business.

Chris Gibbons / Stonewall – LGBT Impact Campaigner Award

His work within Stonewall shaping the Education for All campaign has touched the lives of so many not only in education but set a standard in industry for education excellent. His work has shaped the lives of so many and highlighted the strong campaign work which Stonewall is famous for.

Like the lifetime achievement award this is to recognise the work of an individual or group of individuals who have campaigned for the rights of others throughout their lives. It's a recognition of tireless hard work and dedication to their cause.

Simon Hallam & Sue Green – Community Campaigner Award

Simon Hallam — Simon's work goes back to the early days of the Reading scene setting up a gay bar when the environment was far from pleasant. Having strived through adversity and been part of the community since the early days, campaigning for equal rights and sexual orientation rights early on in his career.

Sue Green — Sue Green has been a strong campaigner for not only women's rights but also for LGBT rights across the Thames Valley and beyond. Her far reaching work has touched the lives of many. Bringing in her wealth of knowledge not only politically but locally to benefit the local LGBT community.

This award is to recognise an individual who has gone above the call of duty to help someone through whatever it takes in order for their lives to improve. It is to say thank you for their hard work and support.
